The 2013 Nissan Altima (2022)

The 2013 Nissan Altima

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima Sedan is the most innovative Altima to date. Built on Nissan's proven D-platform, this 5th generation Altima was designed with improvements in power, responsiveness, and significant gains in fuel-efficiency and drivability.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (1)

The 2013 Altima Sedan is equipped with a redesigned QR25DE 2.5 liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine in models available in four trim levels: 2.5, 2.5S, 2.5SV, and 2.5SL. The QR25 engine for the 2013 Altima sedan gets a slight uptick in power to 182 HP/180 lb-ft torque (50-State), 179 HP/177 lb-ft torque (CAL), (up from 175 hp available from last years version). This QR25DE has been equipped with a new intake and exhaust camshaft variable timing control system. The camshaft sprockets have control vanes that receive oil pressure from solenoid-operated oil control valves. Those solenoids are operated by the Engine Control Unit which determines when and how much to change the timing of each camshaft. The new QR25DE has new fuel injectors that are mounted so they protrude deeper into the cylinder head. This helps them spray fuel in a more efficient manner for increased atomization and spray pattern which helps to improve combustion.

The new premium Altimas will continue with the VQ35DE 3.5 liter DOHC 24 valve 6-cylinder rated at 270-hp with 258 lb-ft of torque. Models equipped with the VQ engine are available in three trim levels: 3.5S, 3.5SV, and 3.5SL. VQ35DE engines have been equipped with a composite Variable Induction System with a variable-volume low intake manifold to broaden the torque curve. Both engines feature a new magnesium oil pan, and a new smart-charging alternator (110 amps on the 2.5, and 130 amps on the 3.5).

The 2013 Nissan Altima (2)

Smart-Charging Alternator

The new Altima is equipped with a smart-charging alternator that helps reduce its engine load and fuel consumption. This is because the alternator's power generation can be varied and/or decreased. The IC regulator controls the power generation by targeting the voltage based on the received Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) command signal. When there is no PWM command signal present, the smart-charging alternator performs normal power generation according to the characteristic of the IC regulator, charging primarily when the vehicle is braking or coasting. When performing the power generation voltage variable control, the ECM calculates the target power generation voltage according to the battery condition. The ECM then sends the calculated value as the power generation command value to the IPDM E/R.

Weight Reduction

To help the all-new 2013 Nissan Altimas improve fuel economy, Nissan design engineers put the new sedan on a diet. Although it has the same wheelbase as last year's model, they were able to significantly reduce its weight by lightening the engine using ultra-high strength steel and aluminum. The 2013 model is only 2 inches longer and weighs in at about 3,101 total pounds, which is considered one of the lightest in the industry for this vehicle segment. The car now is 79 pounds lighter than previous curb weight, thanks to utilization of lightweight materials including an aluminum-alloy hood. The new body design includes the addition of a larger front strut brace (like the one used for the 370Z) and a new rear structural support built into the rear passenger through/parcel shelf. This lightweight package has helped with performance and fuel economy improvements.

The aluminum exhaust heat shield is lighter than the previous design, which helps reduce overall vehicle weight.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (5)

The 2013 Altima was awarded the PUREDRIVE™ badge, (meaning it meets or exceeds the Federal CAFE fuel economy standards for 2016), reflecting Nissan's commitment to developing environmentally friendly technology.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (6)

Next Generation Xtronic CVT®

The 2013 Nissan Altima will be the first Nissan with the next-generation XTRONIC CVT® with DS Mode. The new RE0F10 CVT transmission's dramatically improved technology helps the new Altima achieve up to a 15 percent increase in fuel efficiency. It accelerates faster, is responsive in highway passing, runs quieter and offers a smootherrunning seamless shifting experience. The new smaller XTRONIC CVT® design has even more impressive technology: Altima's CVT has a wide operating range. The transmission ratio is 7.3:1, which is a broader ratio than you'll find in an average automatic, and far superior to the 6.0:1 you'd find in a similar model vehicle. The new Altima's CVT has a lower 1st gear ratio that provides more responsive acceleration than previous versions. The expanded gear ratio with a higher final gear reduces engine revolutions drastically, which allows the Altima to cruise at 60 miles per hour at fewer than 1500 RPMs. Of course, the Xtronic CVT's strength isn't just its range of ratios; it's the availability of each and every possibility within the range. The dramatically improved Intelligent CVT Logic responds with the optimal engine speed and ensures that the transmission is always in the right gear. This also helps reduce noise and provides improved NVH and an even more seamless shifting experience versus an automatic transmission.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (7)

Since this CVT is typically lighter than a traditional automatic it achieves the benefit of both performance and less fuel consumption. The new CVT is a smaller design with almost a complete makeover of transmission parts; its weight and length have been reduced, and it has an improved lubrication capability which attributes to 40% friction reduction. The higher-efficiency and 40 percent reduction in friction versus the previous design allows the car to perform at higher speeds at very low RPMs, so it also helps achieve improved fuel economy over previous transmissions. In the 3.5-liter, the CVT is capable of emulating a traditional automatic transmission when equipped with the standard paddle shifters with manual mode. Shifted into "Drive Sport" mode, Altima's computer logic produces a realistic artificial seven-speed automatic transmission.

The new Xtronic CVT® was designed with a downsized oil pump, and a smaller valve body. The new design uses more precision controls for the valve body this allowed for the elimination of a Step Motor contributing to a more compact valve body.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (8)

As a result of these changes, the new CVT only requires a smaller amount of CVT transmission fluid. The Xtronic CVT requires the use of lower viscosity Genuine Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3.

Front Suspension

The all-new 2013 Altima Sedan has an improved independent strut-type front suspension with coil springs which has been tuned to maximize the ride and handling characteristics of the vehicle.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (10)

The new Altima utilizes stabilizer bars at both front and rear.

Multi-link Rear Suspension

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima's has a redesigned independent rear multi-link rear suspension. The redesigned suspension features a standard upper lateral link and a lower setup that helps deliver improved steering response to create increased tire contact with the road when cornering versus the previous generation Altima. The new rear multilink suspension provides high stiffness and resistance to lateral loads. It features novel connected bushings, and has improved toe angle and camber control to provide dynamic rear handling performance.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (11)

Redesigned Brake System

The new Altima is equipped with power-assisted disc brakes at all four corners, measuring 11.7 inches on the front vented discs and 11.5 solid power-assisted discs on the rear. Anti-lock braking (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist are standard features.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (12)

To improve brake responsiveness and feel on the new Altima, Nissan engineering performed research that studied how people step on their brakes. The findings from these human ergonomic studies helped develop a brake system design that optimizes pedal travel and force to provide optimal response. This helps the braking to not only feel firm and effective, but also helps to effectively reduce foot and leg fatigue when the brakes are applied to stop the Altima.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (13)

The 2013 Nissan Altima (14)

Electronic Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering

The Altima's new electronic hydraulic power-assisted steering (EHPS) preserves the feel of hydraulic steering while supplying the benefits of electric steering.

The power steering system is designed with a hydraulic rack powered by an electrically driven pump to provide power assistance while driving and makes it possible to operate the steering wheel with only light effort. This system also helps to improve fuel economy since it uses electric power instead of power from the engine.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (15)

Note: When the steering wheel is operated repeatedly or continuously while parking or driving at a very low speed, the power assist for the steering wheel will be reduced. This is to prevent overheating of the power steering system and protect it from getting damaged. While the power assist is reduced, steering wheel operation will become heavy. If the steering wheel operation is still performed, the power steering may stop and the power steering warning light will illuminate. If this occurs, stop the engine and push the ignition switch to the OFF position. The temperature of the power steering system will go down after a period of time allowing the power assist level to return to normal. The power steering warning light will stop illuminating when the engine is restarted. Inform the customer about avoiding such steering wheel operations that could cause the power steering system to overheat.

Note: Customers may hear a noise from the front of the vehicle when the steering wheel is operated at lower speeds. This is a normal operational noise and is not a malfunction.

Active Understeer Control

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima's Active Understeer Control system (AUC) provides the driver the benefit of enhanced driver control helping to eliminate "plowing" into corners. Standard on the 2013 Altima Sedan this under steer control system is tuned to have less understeer at all times.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (16)

AUC utilizes intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators working through the traction and stability control system to increase the car's yaw moment during cornering. The system senses understeer and is almost undetectable when it operates, as it subtly applies braking power to the inside front wheels when the vehicle is turning. As it works by braking the inside wheels, it provides for better control through corners giving sharper handling in many conditions.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (17)

Performance Shocks

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima Sedan comes equipped with ZF Sachs twin tube shock absorbers. The Sachs dampers are tuned to provide a soft-ride over small-amplitude bumps while still providing more control when the vehicles wheels start jouncing.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (18)

Improved Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics were improved on the new Altima Sedan due to fit, finished design, dynamic stance. The body is stiffer thanks to greater use of high-strength steel, a new front strut-tower brace and additional structural support aft of the passenger cabin. The all-new 2013 Altima Sedan features a sleeker A-pillar angle and back glass, a low-wide dynamic stance, and laser measured body-panel gaps. The Altima was built with advanced manufacturing techniques that enables some complex surfaces and its new premium exterior shape. The new Altima Sedan slips through the air with more ease and less drag coefficient than ever, dropping from 0.310 to 0.299. This is thanks to underbody air deflectors and panels, that help smooth airflow around the body.

This effort along with minimizing the spaces between the body and the wheels helps the new Altima achieved a tighter, more premium look.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (19)

Auto-Park Wipers

When vehicle is shut off while wipers are in motion, the auto-park wipers will complete a full cycle and come to rest on the bottom of the windshield.

Enhanced Headlights

The standard Automatic headlights on the Altima respond to light conditions outside. These headlights illuminate automatically at twilight and in rain. If the wipers are on so are the headlights – they will automatically activate after 4 wiper swipes. Autolight activation sensitivity and the time delay for Autolight shutoff can be adjusted from the Vehicle settings menu in the vehicle information display. To activate the Autolight system, turn the headlight control switch to the AUTO position then push the ignition switch to ON. To deactivate the Autolight system, turn the headlight control switch to the OFF position.

External ground lighting is courtesy of the optional Altima Accessory Security Lighting (mounted at center mud-guard). This feature uses 4 LED lights between the front and rear tires that will go on to brighten up the area beneath the vehicle. When the driver presses the key for or the entry button or opens the doors, it fades in and out with the dome light.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (20)

The 2013 Nissan Altima (21)

Dual elliptical shaped exhausts complete the new exteriors look.

The 2013 Altima Sedan's interior has plenty of room for front and rear passengers. It's equipped with standard cloth seating with a 6-way driver's seat and a 4-way adjustable front passenger seat, and a 60/40 split folding rear bench seat with armrest.

The all-new 2013 Altima Sedan's premium interior is designed to isolate and help reduce exterior noise and cabin noise coming from the powertrain (with new engine and exhaust mounts). The new Altima was also given increased HVAC mounting rigidity, and body rigidity. These improvements were added along with an effort for greater attention to assembly quality than on previous models. The new interior design utilizes advanced premium soft-touch materials. It also uses new sound absorbent materials throughout the roof trim, instrument panel and floor mats. This has resulted in an incredibly 30 percent quieter cabin than the prior model.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (22)

NASA conducted research in the weightlessness of space, and determined that people should have a natural seating position that optimizes comfort and reduces fatigue. Nissan used the NASA study when they designed the 2013 Altima's front bucket seats. They are a standard "zero gravity" type with an articulated seat shape that provides continuous support. This design reduces muscular and spinal loads from the pelvis to the chest to help achieve the goal of "fatigue-free-seats." Seat surface perforations were also provided to help increase ventilation, breathability and comfort. The front seats on the SL models are equipped with standard builtin heaters controlled by a thermostat. The seat heater elements have been physically focused closer to the body's core to help warm the driver and passenger more quickly.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (23)

Automatic Anti-Glare RearView Mirror

The optional inside auto-dimming Rearview mirror is designed so that it detects headlight glare at night. It functions by automatically dimming according to the intensity of the headlights projected on the Altima from what behind the vehicle. The brighter the glare the darker the mirror becomes.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (24)

The 2013 Nissan Altima (25)

The 3.5 SL Altima Sedans were also given an optional heated steering wheel to provide "a class-above" luxury for the driver on cold days.

Available audio systems include an AM/FM/CD design with RDS, MP3, aux-in and six speakers, along with a BOSE® Premium Audio System with nine speakers (including woofers), designed in conjunction with BOSE® engineers during vehicle development to deliver rich sound and acoustics.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

This TPM system takes away the guesswork when it comes to tire pressures with 4-corner real-time TPMS readout. With this system the tires let the driver know when they need air, as well as when they've got enough. If the vehicle is being driven with low tire pressure, the warning light will illuminate. When the low tire pressure warning light is lit, and the "Tire Pressure Low - Add Air" warning appears in the vehicle information display, one or more of the tires is significantly under-inflated. The system also displays pressure of all tires (except the spare tire) on the display screen by sending a signal from a sensor that is installed in each wheel. The TPMS will activate only when the vehicle is driven at speeds above 16 MPH (25 km/h). This system may not detect a sudden drop in tire pressure (for example a blowout while driving).

The 2013 Nissan Altima (26)

The new Tire Pressure Monitoring System on the Altima is also equipped with Easy Fill Tire Alert to help customers correctly inflate their tire pressures.

When adding air to an under-inflated tire, Easy Fill provides visual and audible signals to help when inflating the tires to the recommended COLD tire pressure specification. When adding air to the tire the hazard indicator lights begin flashing, and when the designated pressure is reached, the horn beeps once and the hazard indicators stop flashing. If the tire gets to much air and is over-inflated (more than 4 psi) the horn beeps and the hazard indicators flash three times. When the pressure is released back to the designated pressure, the horn beeps once. After tire pressures are adjusted, drive the vehicle at speeds above 16 MPH (25km/h). The Tire Pressure Low – Add Air warning message and low tire pressure warning light will disappear.

Safety Technologies

Utilizing the Rearview Monitor system the 2013 Altima Sedan offers enhanced safety with the available Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Moving Object Detection (MOD).

When another vehicle is in the driver's blind spot area, the available Blind Spot Warning (BSW) indicator appears inside the door next to the side mirror, and on the Advanced Driver Assist Display.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (39)

BSW System Operation

The BSW system operates when the Altima is traveling at above approximately 20 MPH (32 km/h). When the wide-angle rearview camera unit detects vehicles in the detection zone, the Blind spot indicator light located inside the car by the outside mirrors will illuminate. If the turn signal is then activated, the system chimes (twice) and the Blind spot indicator light flashes to alert the driver. The Blind spot indicator light continues to flash until the detected vehicle(s) leave the detection zone.

Using the RearView camera to monitor the painted lines on the road, the Lane Departure Warning will give drivers both visual and audible alerts if it detects an unintentional straying from their lane. The Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system helps alert the driver when the vehicle is traveling close to either the left or the right of a traveling lane. The system will operate when the vehicle is driven at speeds of approximately 37 MPH (60 km/h) and above.

Note: If wax, dirt, rain or snow accumulates on the camera, the BSW and/or LDW system will be turned OFF automatically and the LDW light (white) will blink. The "Unavailable: Clean Rear Camera" will appear in the vehicle information display. If the message appears, use the RearView Camera washer system, and/or manually clean the camera unit. Then, turn the car OFF and restart the engine to enable the camera.

If Altima's next-generation RearView Monitor system detects something moving behind a customer's vehicle while it's in reverse, it gives both visual and audible alerts. When the shift selector is in the R (Reverse) position and the vehicle speed is approximately 5 MPH (8 km/h) or less, the MOD system detects moving objects in the rearview or rear-wide view. The MOD system detects moving objects by using image processing technology on the image shown in the display, it is not designed to detect surrounding stationary objects. The MOD system allows the camera angle to be changed to get a wider perspective. The MOD system can be turned ON or OFF using the settings menu in the vehicle information display.

The 2013 Nissan Altima (40)

  • If temperatures are extremely high or low, the screen may not display objects clearly. This is not a malfunction and this symptom will clear up when less extreme temperatures exist.
  • If wax or dirt accumulates on the camera, the RearView Monitor may not display objects or operate properly. If these conditions exist be sure to clean the camera.

Do not use alcohol, benzene or thinner if manually cleaning the Rearview Camera is necessary. This will cause discoloration. To clean the camera, wipe with a cloth dampened with a mild, diluted cleaning agent and then wipe with a dry cloth.
